FUN DIY WEDDING IDEAS FOR YOUR SWEET SPRING WEDDING

The theme for today’s wedding inspiration is sure to put a SRING in your step! But before we tell you about that, we know what you’re all asking? How can I make a pretty pastel arch like that? Well, you’re in luck as we asked founder of The Prop Factory, Carmen to explain the process…

“First thing you should know is that the round wooden structure was built to hire.” she began.

“I then added lots of balloons from 5 inch to 22 inch in our focal colours – they were basic balloons you can buy online, nothing special. I think they cost around £25 for all of them and we had some left over. As well as the balloons we made pastel colored balls, attached wires which we also added to the arch. These were made simply using children’s ball pit balls and Christmas baubles which we sprayed with different colored pastel spray paint – I prefer to use sugar spray paint which is made from sugar and has lower impact on the environment. I then used a hot poker (a drill bit sellotaped to a paint brush held over a candle) to make holes in the ball pit balls and threaded wire through to make a hook. The flowers and ‘concertina worms’ – the only way I can describe them? Were made from scrap fabric I found, which I very roughly cut into 3 cm x 150 cm strips and fashioned them into flowers and concertinas with a needle and thread.”

And the DIY didn’t just end with the arch…

“Other DIY elements were the little foam sweets which I used in the candy themed centerpiece on the table and in the models hair. I made with them using very cheap children craft foam. I bought A5 sheets and cut strips 1cm wide by the length. I then took two different colours and rolled them up together. I added a bit of copydex to the ends and trimmed, then wrapped them in masking tape to hold in place while drying. When dry I poked some thin wire half way through so I poke them into the oasis and they would stay put.” She explained.

“The cake pop table was my favourite DIY! We made some white wooden boxes, which we now hire, but you could use a box, crate or basket. I filled these with several oasis – cutting up, scraps any way as long as the top was flat. On the top I cut a some artificial grass to size, then underneath, I marked equal distances with chalk and used a knife to pierce the mat. When putting the grass back on top and placing the cake pops through which did take some patience as it was hard to see where the holes were.” She laughed.

“With spring on the horizon the theme was inspired from the start, so I covered the arch in a range of colorful pastel balloons – baby pink, powder blue, lilac, willow green and metallic silver.” Carmen explained.

“I would otherwise only pick 3 colours max, and a metallic, but the pastel chairs were all so different I decided to feature even more than I usually would.”

“White, gray or a neutral colored interiors, would be the best type of venue for this styling and wold help the bright pastel colours to standout. Barns would also be great for this look, providing they have a clean, fresh feel to them.” Carmen advised.

“If a venue already had a lot of its own decoration I think the flow of how each area is the same colour and theme would be lost. The small details like the tiny sweets in the table center and ribbons on the balloon arch would also be dwarfed.” She added.

“When advising couples on how to decide on a theme for their wedding it’s best to begin as though your advising someone who doesn’t know where to start.”

“Look at your common interests, things that you agree and unite on. Write it all down, then get your friends to pick our elements that are totally ‘you’ as a couple. From here you can start to build a vision for your wedding that is ‘you’. Let’s say you both love tea, dogs and Christmas then invite those elements into your planning. Have tea to greet your guests as they arrive, a very well behaved pooch as your page boy and give everyone a little present wrapped in Christmas paper as a favor. All these elements might seem random, but pull them together with a colour scheme and general vibe. My advice is, if you love something add it in, if you are unsure scrap the idea. There are endless ideas and inspiration out there so choose what is true to you as a couple.”
