Nothing gets us more excited over here at the Woman Getting Married office than a gorgeous wedding cake. A cake that’s almost (almost!) too pretty to eat is like a combination of EVERYTHING we love about weddings. From the color to the design and of course the filling, wedding cakes have to be one of our favorite things when it comes to planning the big day. And while we’ve seen so many fun wedding cake trends the past few years, this year is definitely turning out to be one of the best yet.

We spoke with Toni Roberts, the genius Pastry Chef from one of our fave Chicago hotels, theWit, known for her amazing chocolate sculptures and of course, gorgeous wedding cakes, about what she thinks are the BIGGEST wedding cake trends emerging this year. Read her insights, below!

1. Geological Elements

“Two big trends are geodes and marbleized fondant. The geodes can be a big statement or just a small detail, and are a great way to incorporate the wedding colors. Marbleization can run the gamut of very natural to color mixes with metallic detailing.”

2. Metals

“The glittery gold of the last few years is moving towards mixed metals: copper, bronze, brass, rose gold, and silver. Hand painted accents and leafing are popular.”

3. Rustic Gets an Update

“The rustic look is taking a more modern approach with linear designs and patterns. Less piling on of flowers and more structured arranging. Naked cakes are moving towards what is being referred to as ‘semi-naked’ with just glimpses of the cake peeking through the frosting.”

4. Fruit Fillings

“Local and seasonal are always the way to go. Berries in the summer; peaches, plums and pears late summer; pumpkin and apples in the fall; citrus in the winter; cherries and rhubarb in the spring and early summer. The fruits can be prepared as jams, curds, and just fresh. I always like a tropical filling with coconut and rum, it really adds some fun to the party!”

5. Interactive Desserts

“We do a ‘By the Fireside” station where guests can toast their own s’mores over mini fires. This is always a hit! Also, we offer doughnut towers that are a very striking addition to the dessert table or the farewell brunch.”

6. Budget-Conscious Accents

“Custom wedding cake toppers from sites like Etsy are always fun to see and are reasonably priced. Also, gold and silver leaf can be expensive, but a little goes a long way in making an effect.”
